Science Projects Create Opportunity for Learning and Bonding with Pets

Monday, November 17, 2014

We're huge advocates of pets and children growing up under the same roof. For a glimpse into the scientific reasons why children who interact with animals at a young age benefit both intellectually and emotionally, check out this article published in the Scientific American. In our own home, we've observed our children growing up with a profound empathy, curiosity and playfulness thanks to the numerous pets we have adopted into our family. It's a beautiful thing to see little feet and little paws running alongside each other, playing, exploring and building a friendship as they grow up together over the years.  READ MORE

Why Dogs and Children Go Together

Thursday, July 24, 2014

We're strong believers of the child-pet friendship, having raised our own children surrounded by dogs, chickens and even amphibians. But dogs, in particular, make excellent companions for kiddos.

When you see them interact, the scene often looks something like this: Children " tug on their tails, rub backwards on their fur, and take a seat right on their bellies when tired." What's interesting is that most dogs not only tolerate this treatment, but go back for more when the child walks away. If an adult treated them in such a manner, though, they'd probably earn a nip or at the very least, the cold shoulder. So what makes dogs such tolerant, protective and loving guardians of children?  READ MORE

Are Pets Good for Children? The Answer is Yes, and Here's Why

Thursday, May 15, 2014

According to an article published in the Scientific American, children who interact with animals at a young age develop a more accurate understanding of biology. Moreover, children who turn to pets for emotional support are notably less anxious and withdrawn than children without pets. Children with pets also scored higher on overall measurement of empathy.  READ MORE

Timeless and Creative Ideas to Make the Pets & Kids Connection

Thursday, May 15, 2014

A pet care business is the most amazing business to have when you've got kids. We have so many wonderful memories of our kids with pets. One of our fondest was when our son Mason was one. He was doing what any self-respecting one-year-old does in a high chair, he chucked food! It was Christmas week, and we had a few dogs in our home. We were baking peanut butter cookies, and my son was eating dinner in his high chair as a neatly crafted semi-circle of dogs formed beneath him. They waited patiently for small bits of peas and carrots to be flung exuberantly in every direction. Not only was it hysterical to witness, but the best part was that we didn't have to clean up any of the mess!  READ MORE

Kids and Animals, It's a Love Affair

Friday, January 31, 2014

I have many wonderful memories to share about my kids, our dogs, and our pet care business. Here is one of my fondest.

When my son Mason was one, he was doing what any self-respecting one-year-old does in a high chair, he chucked food. It was the Christmas holiday week, and we had a few dogs boarding in our home. I was baking some peanut butter cookies, and as I pulled a fresh batch from the stove, I turned and saw that beneath the high chair was a neatly crafted semi-circle of dogs patiently sitting, waiting  for small bits of peas and carrots to be flung exuberantly in every direction. Not only was this hysterical to witness, but I thought, “brilliant, I don’t have to clean those up!”  READ MORE

Socializing Animals and Kids - It's a Wonderful Thing!

Friday, January 24, 2014

A pet care business is the most amazing business to have when you've got kids. My five year old can tell you if a dog is a Grey Hound or Basset Hound.  My nine year old comes along on dog walks, and can identify an approaching dog's demeanor; whether it's friendly or fear aggressive. It's awesome, and I smile a lot when I think how we've been able to share the wonderful world of animals with our kids.

Our house is fun, crazy and loving.....and I give most of the credit to the animals. Our house is the perfect house for socializing dogs. We have chickens, cats, dogs, and a gecko. I should put a sign on our door that reads Animal House-minus the frat boys. (hehehe…well, until my boys get older.)  It’s been a gradual accomplishment that has taken patience and love.

Life with Animals and Kids!

Wednesday, January 22, 2014

We live the country life, here in the middle of our urban city. We have a pet care business where we help families care for their furry companions. Some of the basic services we provide are dog walking, cat sitting, and improving the relationship between animals and their humans, through guidance and support. When our own babes were born, we reached a whole new level of appreciation for what we were doing, and how it has affected our lives.

Fast forward ten years later, and we have dogs, cats, chickens, a gecko, a mouse, and two lively and wonderful boys. Gosh, I’ll say it again, we need a sign on our front door that reads “Animal House.” Our house is crazy, loud, and fun! It’s a bit messy, because kids and animals are always running amok, and tracking stuff in and out of the house. I generally buy second hand, so it already has a that "well-loved" feel. I know that the dog is considered to be man's best friend, but I would say my Dyson comes in as a close second.  READ MORE
